How to improve your credit score

It is easier to be acquainted with one’s credit report because an individual can request for one free on an every twelve months basis as mandated by law under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Thus, any disputes in terms of irregularities in the report can be formally filled within 60 days after it is released to the inquiring body. Even a credit reporting agency’s sources are disclosed upon request so even incorrect names and addresses filed can be used as evidence for whatever negative results a report like this causes on an individual borrower’s credit reputation. On the other hand, a credit score although rarely utilized by lenders, insurers, and financial organizations cannot be easily understood on an individual basis because it is not free.

Although there are now agencies which offer paid credit score checking which are mostly based online, the most generally used system is FICO. These agencies may charge fees for scores based on FICO conducted evaluations anyway. Since, a credit score is based on what credit reports, taking time to understand how FICO’s system works can help one improve overall score on credit status. Moreover, disputes on denied applications based on reports can be backed up by hiring these agencies for second opinion.

To improve one’s credit score, strategies should be contemplated upon in relation to these factors which are enumerated according to importance: payment history, utilization of credit limit, length of credit history, types of credit used, and recent inquiries made on your credit report. The first two are the most important variables with FICO allotting 35% and 30% to both respectively. The third factor is at 15% and the last two tied both at 10% each. Obviously there is not much that can be done with the third factor yet for those who have literally zero credit history; you can start building one with safe small loans or basic credit cards you can afford to pay for. Afterwards, you can work your way up with other services listed under the fourth bracket once your reputation is built on higher grounds. On the last factor, better compare all companies offering the same service you need instead of applying right away which will lessen the number of report inquiries under your name. The second variable is improved by paying as diligently as possible to prevent any overdrafts. This also improves your standing on the number one factor.
